JTC Surface Engineering Hub (SEH) is a unique, first-of-its-kind multi-tenanted development in Singapore that integrates companies along the entire surface engineering value chain. Set up in 1968, JTC is the lead government agency responsible for the development of industrial infrastructure in Singapore. Today, it continues to develop innovative industrial infrastructure to cater to the present and future needs of
industries and enterprises. The JTC Surface Engineering Hub (SEH) showcases how JTC is committed to helping companies and enterprises to grow and upgrade their business processes to remain competitive and enhance the productivity level. The SEH models the effectiveness of clustering companies within the same industry. This strategy allows the SEH to optimise land, achieve collaborative synergies, and facilitate networking and the sharing of know-how amongst surface engineering companies as well as amongst
complementary businesses such as equipment suppliers, chemical solution providers and other related businesses. The SEH exemplifies JTC’s efforts in pioneering innovative space solutions that are equipped with shared facilities for companies to tap on to save costs. A key feature of the Hub is its centralised wastewater treatment plant (CWTP), which helps companies in surface engineering activities, many of whom are SMEs, to reduce space requirements, operational costs and upfront capital investment that enable them to have a quick start-up. For example, the CWTP has helped JEP Precision Engineering, a SME
in precision engineering, to lower space requirements by 350sqm, upfront capital investment by $300,000 and operating costs by 10% to 15%. This is possible because of a 10% to 15% reduction in treatment chemicals and electricity used in the wastewater treatment process due to economies of scale and it contributes to environmental sustainability. Innovative facilities like the SEH also encourage companies like
SMEs to re-engineer their business processes.
